Guardrails vs. handrails — and why it matters
The two terms get used interchangeably, but they do different jobs. A guardrail (or guard) protects people from falling off an elevated edge — a balcony, deck, stair landing, walkway, or roof. A handrail is the rail you grip for support on a stair or ramp. Many locations need both, and each has its own requirements for height, strength, openings, and graspability under the Florida Building Code.

Built to code, built to fit
Guard and handrail requirements depend on the occupancy, the location, and the drawings for your project. As a general guide, the Florida Building Code sets minimum guard heights (higher for multifamily and commercial buildings than for one- and two-family homes), limits the size of openings in a guard, specifies handrail height and grip size, and requires guards and handrails to resist specified loads. Your plans and engineer of record set the final requirements.
That’s why each project we take on is engineered by a licensed structural engineer to meet load and code requirements, with field measurements and shop drawings completed before fabrication begins. Accurate field measurements matter most on stairs and ramps, where every run is a little different.
Accessible ramps and handrails
Ramps and accessible routes have their own handrail requirements, including continuity, extensions at the top and bottom, and clearances. We fabricate ramp handrails to the approved drawings so they fit the concrete as poured — see the ramp and stair railings in our Rooftop Screening & Access Railings project.
Aluminum, fabricated in house
We fabricate in house at our Hollywood, FL shop, welding each run to spec according to the approved shop drawings, and our own crew handles installation. For homeowners and property owners, we’ll walk through options, finishes, and budget before anything is built. For developers and GCs, we coordinate with your project team so guardrails and handrails are ready for inspections when you need them.
